Early large black bale-handled pantry box with folk art design

This is a wonderful example of a folk art bale-handled pantry box. The pantry box is a nice size, 11 3/4 x 7 1/4” tall, for beautiful display. The black paint is original, as is the polychrome flowers and foliage. The box also has paint on the inside, which most likely occurred at a later time. The box is in very good condition with only a minor crack, a small divot peg pop and a small piece of band missing on the top. The box also retains its original varnish that has oxidized and hardened to create a nice crazing/alligatoring effect. Ca. mid-19th century.

Hollow cut silhouette of a young man

An extremely fine profile hollow-cut silhouette of a young man. Excellent detail. Early hollow-cut paper laid on black. Early 19th Century, in a tiger maple frame. Possibly Pennsylvania, Circa 1820-1840. The sitter is identified on the back paper as "THOMAS BURNAP," but authenticity and accuracy is not something I can verify.
Excellent condition without rips or tears; there is only the most minor of spotting on the early laid paper.
It was professionally re-framed and conserved by the last owners in its original tiger maple frame.
Frame is 6" tall and 5" wide, sight is 4" by 3". Typical wear and imperfections with age. Very minor foxing and staining as seen.

Sponge-paint decorated sliding lid box

This beautiful sliding lid box comes from Bucks County, PA, mid1800s. It is sponge-painted in straight rows in a dry muted yellow on black background. The box has been well-preserved from sunlight and extremes in temperatures, because the paint looks so unworn; however, the paint is original and old. There are a few nicks and scratches. The paint is dry, although some photos have a shiny spotlight look in them. Paint on the inside of the box most likely was added later. Dimensions: 18.5" by 7" by 5"

Schoharie blanket chest

Schoharie blanket chest with the original hand-painted decoration. The chest is decorated with a basket of colorful flowers, along with a border decorated in bright yellow. The style is typical of the folk art chests originating in Schoharie and Albany counties of New York State, when a group of German settlers made their way there. Examples can be found in the Albany Institute, in Antiques Magazine, and in a book on this subject by Mary Antoine de Julio. The chest has a good old patina with minor restoration to the back feet. Ca. 1815. Dimensions: 43" wide by 20" high by 17" deep.

Antique miniature coffee grinder

This sweet antique miniature coffee grinder measures just 2.5" x 2.5" x 4." It's a wonderful display piece in any country collection. It even sports a tiny front drawer that works. In fact, the grinder works, so I suppose you could use it for grinding pepper, if you want. I assume this little piece was once an advertising sample in the late 1800s. This miniature piece was found in Ohio.

Grain-painted sliding lid box

This grain-painted sliding lid box is most likely mid to late 1800s. It measures 7-1/4 inches by 4 inches by 4-3/4 inches and was once just green wood that someone decided to make look much prettier by grain-painting it in a mustard color. It is simply constructed of thin pieces of pine. Found in Ohio, the short and stubby box has seen lots of wear but remains sturdy and worth using and admiring.

Early carved and signed oval pantry box

This early carved and signed oval pantry box says "LS" on both the top lid and the bottom of the box. The box measures 9-3/4" by 5" by 3-1/2" and is stitched and sturdily built by thick walls, braided laces and square nails and pegs. I found this box in Ohio and believe it originated in the United States; however, I saw something with similar carvings recently that was attributed to English origins. Whatever it is, it's beautiful and very early, perhaps late 1700's. (If anyone familiar with this type of box, wood and/or carvings would like to discuss with me, please do!)
