Folk Art

Sarah Clementine Henry Portrait

According to writing on the back of this portrait in its original gold frame, the sitter is Sarah Clementine Henry, and she was painted at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut. This folk art painting is pleasant to look at, from Sarah's naive school-girl expression to the colorful jeweled purse she holds in her lap. Her gold hair and red dress, along with the colorful purse, are sure to catch anyone's eye and would make a wonderful conversation piece. Of personal significance to me, my son shares the sitter's last name. If you are a Henry or have Henry's in your background, this could be a wonderful piece to own. Dimensions: 23" wide by 30" tall. Ca. late 1800s; Connecticut

Attractive-looking Black male and female couple

This is an attractive-looking black male and female couple dating to the late 1800s, early 1900s. They are made of old stockings and have faded from dark brown to light brown over time. The male is 15" tall. His britches are made of a tan velveteen material that covers the length of his lower body and feet and is hand-stitched. The top half of his body to his hands and neck is made of red early material. He has a little red collar that has become loose. There are small holes that show old repairs in the armpits of the doll. The man's hands have a groove for thumbs. Both dolls have hand-embroidered eyes, mouths and eyebrows, and pinch-stitched noses. Their realistic hair is made of curly yarn. The female doll is 16" and also is hand-stitched. She wears a red hand-stitched skirt and blouse that shows much fading and a few stains. Her pantiloons retain the original color of the red. The dolls are full of delightful character and appear to have been very loved over the years.
